BMW Digital Key On A New Phone: Pairing And Setup Cards

If your BMW Digital Key stopped working after a phone upgrade, you may need to set it up again on the new device. The right process depends on your BMW: some vehicles require two working physical fobs, while others use a Setup Card and one fob. A failed phone setup alone does not mean you need a replacement car key.

Before changing anything, keep a working physical key available. Avoid deleting all existing Digital Keys or resetting the vehicle as your first step—you need a reliable way to unlock and start the car while you sort out the new phone.

Does BMW Digital Key Transfer To A New iPhone?

Do not assume that restoring your apps and signing into My BMW will leave your Digital Key ready to use. BMW USA’s guidance says you can re-establish the key on your new iPhone using the setup method supported by your vehicle. Check that the key is available and working before relying on the new phone for access.

For an Android upgrade, follow the instructions for your supported device and vehicle. BMW provides a separate Android Setup Card process, so iPhone wallet screens and menu steps may not match what you see.

It also helps to identify whether you previously used the owner’s main Digital Key or a key shared with you. If someone shared access to their BMW, tell them you have changed phones before attempting the owner’s setup process.

Digital Key, Digital Key Plus, Or My BMW Remote Controls?

These features can all involve your phone, but they work differently:

  • BMW Digital Key: Uses near-field communication, or NFC. Hold a compatible phone near the driver’s door handle to unlock, then place it on the designated smartphone tray to start.
  • BMW Digital Key Plus: Supports hands-free access on compatible vehicles and devices using ultra-wideband, or UWB. Depending on the supported features and settings, your phone can stay in your pocket.
  • My BMW remote controls: Commands such as remote unlock or the horn are separate app functions. A successful remote command does not confirm that your phone’s wallet key is ready.

If the app unlocks your BMW but the phone cannot unlock or start it as a key, note that distinction. It gives support a clearer starting point than “the app does not work.”

Do You Need Two Fobs Or A Setup Card And One Fob?

You need the credentials required by your vehicle’s setup method. BMW documents both a two-fob route and a Setup Card route; they are not interchangeable on every BMW.

For vehicles that use the Setup Card, BMW specifies the card and one physical fob—even if you have two fobs. Buying another fob will not replace a missing Setup Card on that system.

Choose The Setup Route For Your BMW

Vehicle Or Setup Situation Credential Route To Verify Next Source Or Support
Your BMW uses the two-fob setup method Both working physical fobs must be present Follow BMW’s two-fob instructions for your vehicle
Your BMW uses a Setup Card The vehicle’s Setup Card and one physical fob Follow BMW’s Setup Card instructions for your phone
You have only a Service Card A Service Card does not replace the Setup Card Ask a BMW Center which setup credentials your vehicle needs
You have one fob and no Setup Card First identify your vehicle’s required method and what is missing Contact BMW before buying another fob or card
You have the required credentials, but pairing fails Check the account, phone, vehicle connection, and error message BMW support or a BMW Center

BMW’s US instructions describe the two-fob setup process separately from Setup Card enrollment. Use the instructions that apply to your vehicle rather than combining steps from both.

BMW Setup Card Vs Service Card: Which Do You Have?

The Setup Card helps you set up the phone. On supported vehicles, it starts the setup process and helps authorize you as the owner. BMW’s iPhone instructions then require you to enter the vehicle with your phone and physical key to finish. Store the Setup Card securely outside the car afterward.

The Service Card provides vehicle access once activated. It is intended for situations such as service visits, valet parking, or towing. BMW’s activation instructions require an existing physical or digital key inside the vehicle. It is not a substitute for the Setup Card used to enroll your new phone.

If you bought a used BMW, identify the card you received before trying to pair the phone. Do not assume that any card in the glovebox serves the same purpose. Keep Setup Card QR codes and other credentials out of public photos or forum posts.

Is Your New Phone Compatible With Your BMW?

A newer phone does not automatically support every Digital Key feature your previous phone offered. Check the exact device, software, and vehicle combination, especially if you switched between iPhone and Android.

BMW publishes separate compatibility requirements for Digital Key and Digital Key Plus. Support for the basic key does not by itself establish support for hands-free entry.

Before another pairing attempt, identify:

  • Your BMW’s model and year.
  • Your new phone’s exact model and operating-system version.
  • Whether you previously used Digital Key or Digital Key Plus.
  • Whether the new phone is missing the key entirely or has a key that fails during use.

These details help distinguish a setup problem from a feature the new device does not support. They also avoid relying on an older tutorial written for a different BMW or phone.

What To Check If BMW Digital Key Pairing Fails

If your BMW Digital Key is not working after a phone upgrade, work through these checks before repeating the setup or removing existing keys.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Verify that your exact phone and BMW support the Digital Key version you are trying to use.
  2. Check your BMW ID. For the owner’s main key, sign into the correct account and confirm that your BMW is associated with it. A used-car ownership or account issue needs attention before repeated pairing attempts.
  3. Gather the required fobs and card. Use the setup method for your vehicle. A Service Card cannot fill the role of a missing Setup Card.
  4. Check the app and wallet. Note whether the key appears in the phone’s supported wallet and where setup stops. If an installed Digital Key Plus will not unlock hands-free, BMW advises checking Bluetooth and the wallet’s passive-entry setting.
  5. Follow the required vehicle state. Use the instructions for your setup method. For example, BMW’s two-fob Digital Key Plus instructions require the engine to be off.
  6. Record what still works. Note whether a physical fob unlocks and starts the car, whether the old phone still works, and whether the new phone fails during setup, unlocking, or starting.

Save the exact error message, including any “pairing failed” notice. A working physical fob is useful information, but it does not prove that the phone’s Digital Key has been configured correctly.

Digital Key Works, But The Physical Fob Does Not

If your phone unlocks and starts the BMW but the physical fob no longer provides hands-free entry through Comfort Access, report that separately. The fob’s symptoms need different checks from a problem pairing your new phone.

If the car stopped detecting the fob after you changed its battery, mention that timing too. It gives the technician a more useful starting point than treating both issues as a Digital Key setup failure.

When To Contact BMW Or Have Your Physical Key Checked

Contact BMW For Phone, Wallet, Or Account Problems

Contact BMW support if you have the fobs or cards required for setup but still cannot complete it, your vehicle is linked to the wrong BMW ID, or you are unsure which setup method applies. Persistent Digital Key problems may need a BMW Center appointment.

Have your VIN, phone model, software version, exact error message, and available fobs or cards ready. If your vehicle supports setup by card, follow BMW’s instructions for setting up Digital Key Plus on an iPhone or using the Setup Card with Android.

Have A Missing Or Faulty Physical Fob Assessed

If a missing or faulty fob prevents you from completing setup, check whether a specialist can program a replacement for your BMW before buying one. Before booking a key-fob replacement, ask what ownership documents you need and whether the vehicle must be present.

For help in Palm Beach County, contact Door N Key about replacing or programming a physical BMW key. When you request an assessment, provide your VIN, model year, how many fobs you have, and whether each unlocks and starts the car. Include the Digital Key error and explain how the missing or faulty fob is preventing setup.
